This post walks through my recent Voron Trident overhaul
When code starts behaving the soldering iron starts looking tempting. This time the engineering effort moved away from software and into steel wiring and printed parts.
The work covered installing the HyperNova toolhead rebuilding the motion system with new linear rails and preparing for a Cartographer v4 (normal profile) upgrade. Mechanical precision meets obsessive calibration.
๐ฉ The HyperNova Lands
After eyeing the HyperNova for months I finally pulled the trigger. This ultra compact high performance toolhead from Hyperdrive Design is more than just good looking.
It offers a lighter assembly for improved speed and accuracy cleaner wiring and cable routing and near drop in compatibility provided you are willing to read the documentation properly.
-Yes it required some firmware and config finagling but the results were worth it.
๐ค๏ธ Rail Swap & Carriage Overhaul
Toolhead swaps are a slippery slope. Once the carriage was off it was impossible to ignore the slightly crunchy motion on the X rail.
That escalated quickly.
The old rail came out the mounting channel was cleaned with IPA, a fresh rail and carriage went in and everything was greased with far more care than most people would consider reasonable.
The result is motion that is smooth consistent and no longer quietly judging me.
๐บ๏ธ Cartographer v4 Prep
Next was preparation for the Cartographer v4 install. I opted for the normal profile to balance cooling performance with accessibility and maintenance.
The installation is now complete and working beautifully. Parts were printed, wiring labelled and the BOM was checked off so there are no surprises later.
๐ง Belt Tension Resonance Tuning & Graphs Galore
Once the hardware was in place calibration became unavoidable.
Belt tension was recalibrated from scratch with no trust placed in previous measurements. From there came input shapers and resonance testing as the printer sang whined and vibrated its way through tap tests and acceleration sweeps.
Belt tuning is now symmetrical and smooth. Resonance graphs are clean and consistent per axis. Input shaping is dialled in for clean corners and ripple free infill.
-Painful exacting work but vital. There is no faking print quality.

Final Notes
This kind of work scratches a different itch. It is not about tests CI pipelines or abstractions. It is about alignment tolerance and shaving microns off print wobble.
-Next post will probably involve more software induced suffering. However, for now the extruder sings.
