Why push further?

LatencyLab was built to settle performance arguments early, ideally before they become emotional, political or expensive. It is a design time simulation tool, not a profiler and not a dashboard. Its purpose is to make coordination, delay and contention visible before code exists.

The uncomfortable question I had not fully answered until now was simple.

What happens if you push it far harder than is reasonable.

What changed and what did not

The model used here is unchanged. The semantics are unchanged. The UI is unchanged. Only the number of runs increased.

Two hundred runs became ten thousand. Ten thousand became one hundred thousand.

Nothing new was tuned to help the result. Nothing was simplified. I did not collapse data, smooth curves or hide outliers. I simply let the model speak for longer.

What scale actually revealed

What is interesting is not how extreme the numbers became. It is how little they moved.

The makespan distribution tightened rather than drifting. Percentiles shifted slightly, as they should but no new shape emerged. There was no second hump, no hidden regime and no dramatic tail explosion waiting to be discovered by sampling harder.

The critical path frequencies tell the more important story.

At one hundred thousand runs, three dominant paths account for the overwhelming majority of outcomes. Their proportions are stable. The remaining paths collapse rapidly into a long tail that is mathematically present and practically irrelevant for typical user experience.

This is not stochastic noise being averaged away. It is structure asserting itself.

When arguments quietly disappear

At lower run counts it is easy to argue that another path might dominate, that the tail could matter or that more data is required before drawing conclusions. At one hundred thousand runs that argument quietly disappears.

More samples did not reveal new problems. They clarified which problems were never real.

This is the moment where many performance discussions usually go wrong. Faced with uncertainty, teams ask for more data. Faced with clarity, they often ask again, usually because the answer is inconvenient.

What this says about performance work

What this stress test demonstrates is that there is a point where additional sampling increases confidence but not insight. Past that point, running more simulations does not change the answer. It only makes it harder to deny.

LatencyLab is not trying to find the perfect percentile or the worst possible case. It is trying to expose dominant behavior, coordination patterns and the reasons users wait. When those stabilize, the argument is over.

If the results here feel uncomfortable, that is expected. They were uncomfortable for me too.

The tool did not become more impressive at one hundred thousand runs. It became quieter.

That is the outcome I was hoping for.
